Durante 12 años, miré la cara de la mujer tatuada en el hombro de mi marido y me pregunté por qué nunca me decía quién era. Entonces, una tarde, me la encontré por casualidad dentro de una panadería, y el miedo en sus ojos me hizo darme cuenta de que había estado haciendo la pregunta equivocada todo el tiempo.

Desde el primer día que conocí a Ryan, noté el tatuaje. No era un nombre, ni una rosa, ni uno de esos símbolos abstractos que la gente decía que tenían un significado profundo.

Era el rostro de una mujer, un retrato detallado. Parecía joven, quizá de poco más de veinte años, con cabello oscuro, ojos pensativos y una tristeza en su expresión que nunca parecía desaparecer.

Al principio, no dije nada. Acabábamos de empezar a salir, y yo quería ser el tipo de novia que no se sintiera amenazada por cosas que existían antes de que ella llegara.

Cada vez que Ryan llevaba una camiseta de tirantes, ahí estaba ella. Cada vez que íbamos a la playa, ella estaba allí. Cada vez que se giraba en la cama, ahí estaba ella.

Observando.

Finalmente, la curiosidad ganó.

“¿Quién es ella?”

Ryan apenas miró el tatuaje. “Nadie.”

No lo suficiente para empezar una discusión, pero sí para quedarse en mi mente.

Varios años después, cuando nos comprometiéramos, volví a sacar el tema. Esta vez se rió.

“No hay ninguna gran historia.”
