She was calling from inside a locked bathroom at the local police station, whispering through tears so quietly I could barely hear her.
“Your brother’s wife beat me with a baseball bat,” she sobbed. “Then she convinced the officers I was the dangerous one… and your brother stood there without saying a single word.”
Twenty minutes later, I walked through the front doors of that precinct—and the desk sergeant turned ghostly pale the instant he discovered who I really was.
