The Weight of the Past

articleUseronAugust 5, 2026

Lauren,

If you are reading this, I am dead, and you finally know the truth. I never expected you to forgive me, but I need you to know why.

Eleven years ago, I was diagnosed with a rare genetic heart condition. The treatments were experimental and wildly expensive. Mom and Dad didn’t have the money, and I was ready to give up. But Mark found out. He loved you so much, Lauren, but he also couldn’t bear to see your family destroy itself over my medical bills.

He tried to take out a secret loan, but it wasn’t enough. That’s when he discovered a clause in his wealthy grandfather’s trust fund: a massive payout would be released to him immediately, but only under two conditions—he had to be married, or he had to be going through a high-asset divorce.

He couldn’t just give me the money without you noticing hundreds of thousands of dollars missing from your joint accounts. And he knew you would never let him sacrifice his inheritance for me. So, he made a desperate, horrific choice. He begged me to help him stage an affair. He knew that if you caught us, you would divorce him instantly, take half of everything, and he could funnel his share of the trust straight to my medical treatments under the guise of an “anonymous donor.”

We chose a hotel room because we knew you’d follow his location. We never touched each other, Lauren. Not once. It was all a twisted, desperate theater to save my life and ensure you got the financial security you deserved from his family’s wealth.

Mark ruined his reputation and lost the only woman he ever loved so I could live another ten years. Please don’t hate him. Hate me.

The Aftermath

The paper slipped from my fingers, fluttering down into the box.

The anger that had fueled my life for a decade evaporated, replaced by a cold, hollow shock. I looked at the medical receipts in the box—every single one paid for by a shell company registered in Mark’s name.

“Lauren? You find something?” Dad’s voice called out from the kitchen.

I looked at the image of the man pointing accusingly from the warning sign on Clara’s desk—a reminder to be careful with your heart. I realized then that my anger hadn’t protected me; it had just kept me blind.

“No, Dad,” I choked out, wiping a hot tear from my cheek as I clutched the journal to my chest. “Just… some old memories. I think I’m going to stay for the funeral after all.”
