The mystery of the old woman who bought 60 kilos of meat a day: the truth behind an abandoned ship

articleUseronAugust 13, 2026

Ovidiu understood at last: all that meat was for animals. Lydia told them that, after the death of her son, she had not been able to bear to see abandoned animals. It started with two dogs. Then there were five, ten, and more continued to come.
A refuge made with love and scrap

Christianity

The ship was not luxurious, but it was clean. There were containers with fresh water, old blankets, straw and makeshift cages for sick animals. On a wall hung a notebook where Lidia carefully scored each rescue: where she had found it, what treatment she received and whether she had been adopted.

“He has given dozens of animals for adoption…” an agent muttered as he flipped through the pages.

“Sixty-eight,” she replied. But no one wanted them.

His pension was not enough, so he collected cardboard and scrap metal. Everything he earned was destined for food and medicine. He had not asked for help because he feared that they would take the animals to saturated shelters where the old and sick would hardly find a home.
The Community Response

The news spread quickly. To the surprise of many, the city did not react with anger, but with solidarity. Ovidiu, the butcher, was the first to offer meat each week. A veterinarian pledged to treat the animals without charging. Volunteers came to clean up the ship and build safer shelters.

The municipality, along with a protective association of animals, got an authorized land where the animals were gradually moved. There they would receive proper care and would be more likely to be adopted. Lidia was invited to stay as a permanent volunteer.
The real lesson

The first day at the new shelter, one of the policemen went to visit her. He found her caressing an old dog who had fallen asleep on his knees.

“You know what?” he said, smiling. When we received the complaint, I was convinced that we were going to discover something terrible.

Lidia looked at him calmly and replied quietly:

“And they discovered it. The loneliness. That’s the most terrible thing.
