My Boyfriend Insisted That I Take 2 Showers a Day – His Odd Request Became Clear When I Met His Mother

articleUseronAugust 6, 2026

He looked unusually serious, and for once, he seemed unsure how to begin. Jacob was normally confident and direct, so his hesitation immediately made me uneasy.

“Sophie,” he started, his voice lower than usual, betraying a hint of awkwardness, “I’m struggling to fully commit to you because there’s something that bothers me.”

My heart tightened.

For several seconds, I imagined every possible explanation. Maybe he was unhappy. Maybe he no longer wanted the relationship. Maybe he had been hiding doubts for months.

Then he continued.

“It’s a bit awkward, but would you be willing to shower more often?”

I stared at him.

The request made no sense.

I showered every day and had always taken personal hygiene seriously. I could not understand why he would suggest otherwise.

Seeing my confusion, Jacob explained that he had unusually high standards for cleanliness and could not compromise on them. He believed showering twice a day would make him feel more comfortable in the relationship.

His request left me embarrassed and uncertain.

Still, because he spoke so earnestly, I reluctantly agreed.

That night, I lay awake replaying the conversation.

It seemed like such a small and strange thing to focus on, yet Jacob had presented it as a serious obstacle between us. I wondered whether it was a warning sign or simply an unusual preference I should accept.

Wanting to trust him, I decided to follow his request.

I had no idea that this minor change would become the beginning of a much larger unraveling.

Adding another shower to my daily routine was not something I ever expected to do for a relationship.

Yet I began restructuring my days around Jacob’s concern.

My mornings started earlier so I could shower before work. I became more careful about choosing clothes, hoping everything about my appearance would meet his approval.

In the evenings, I showered again.
What had once been a refreshing routine became a stressful obligation.

I bought different body washes, deodorants, powders, and scented products, searching for anything that might remove the odor Jacob claimed to notice.

Even though I was doing everything he asked, I became increasingly self-conscious.

I constantly wondered whether I smelled strange, whether other people noticed, and whether Jacob was silently judging me.

Several weeks later, during another quiet evening, he asked to speak with me again.

The tension in his face told me the conversation would not be easy.

“Soph, I really like you, but the showering isn’t helping,” he confessed.

Then he hesitated before saying what he claimed he had been avoiding.

“I didn’t want to hurt your feelings, but I asked you to shower more because you have a body odor issue.”

The words were humiliating.

No one had ever mentioned such a problem before. I had never noticed anything myself. Yet hearing it from someone I trusted made me doubt my own senses.

I had already changed my routine, spent money on new products, and become anxious about my body.

Now Jacob was telling me none of it had worked.

After that conversation, I became obsessed with finding an explanation.

I researched possible causes of body odor, medical conditions, treatments, and specialized products.

My bathroom shelves filled with increasingly expensive soaps, sprays, and powders. I bought anything that promised complete odor protection.

But the more effort I made, the more disconnected I became from my own perception.

I no longer trusted what I smelled or did not smell.

I trusted Jacob.
