Emma resta calme.

— Non, Blake. J’ai simplement continué ma vie.

Pendant le vol, il parla de leur passé, de leur mariage détruit, des messages qu’il avait trouvés sur son téléphone et qu’il avait pris pour la preuve d’une trahison. Emma ne chercha plus à se défendre. Cinq ans plus tôt, il avait déjà choisi de la condamner sans l’écouter.

À l’atterrissage, elle sortit rapidement de l’aéroport. Blake la suivit du regard, persuadé qu’elle était toujours seule.

Puis une Bentley noire s’arrêta devant le trottoir.

La portière s’ouvrit.

Trois petits garçons descendirent en courant.

— Maman !

Emma s’agenouilla et les serra contre elle, les yeux pleins de larmes.

Blake resta figé.

Les enfants avaient les yeux d’Emma, mais son visage à lui. Les mêmes cheveux sombres, le même sourire, les mêmes traits Harrington.

— Emma… ce sont mes fils ? murmura-t-il.

Elle se releva lentement.

— Tu aurais pu le savoir, si tu m’avais écoutée.

Les messages qu’il avait découverts venaient d’un médecin. Emma était enceinte, mais la grossesse était fragile. Elle voulait attendre les résultats avant de lui annoncer la vérité. Blake, aveuglé par la jalousie, avait demandé le divorce avant même de comprendre.

Il baissa les yeux, brisé.

— Pourquoi tu ne m’as rien dit ?

Emma regarda ses trois garçons.

— Parce que tu m’as quittée avant de me croire.

Puis elle monta dans la Bentley avec ses enfants.

Avant que la portière se referme, elle ajouta doucement :

— Tu n’as pas seulement perdu une épouse, Blake. Tu as perdu une famille.

La voiture s’éloigna, laissant Blake seul devant l’aéroport, avec une vérité qu’aucune fortune ne pourrait jamais réparer.
