I came home to visit my elderly mother, but when I offered to help bathe her, she shrank back in terror – usnews

“After your father died, Julian came every weekend. He fixed the porch railing. He drove me to church. Chloe brought casseroles and told everyone they were worried about me living alone.”

I remembered those months. Julian had called me repeatedly, criticizing my work schedule and insisting that Mother needed someone nearby. I had offered to pay for a home aide, but he rejected the idea.

“Family should take care of family,” he had said.

At the time, the words had made me feel ashamed.

Now I understood they had been the opening move.

“When did they move in?” I asked.

“Last winter. They said their house was being renovated, but I later learned they had lost it. Julian had borrowed against everything.”

“What happened after that?”

“At first, they were kind. Then Chloe started taking my mail. Julian told me the bank had changed its rules and that I needed to add him to my accounts.”

“Did you agree?”

“To one checking account. Just so he could pay the electric bill if I got sick.”

“And the other accounts?”

“I never agreed to those.”

She explained that Julian had begun accompanying her to medical appointments. He answered questions for her, interrupted when she spoke, and repeatedly told doctors that she was confused. When she challenged him, he laughed and said forgetfulness was normal at her age.

Soon, Chloe began hiding objects around the house.

Mother’s glasses disappeared from the kitchen and appeared in the linen closet. Her purse vanished from beside her bed and was later found in the garage. Medication bottles were moved, appointments were erased from the calendar, and the clocks were deliberately set to different times.

“They wanted me to think I was losing my mind,” she said.

The method was cruel, patient, and calculated.

I had prosecuted people who used the same tactics on vulnerable adults. Isolation came first. Then confusion. Then dependency. By the time the victim realized what was happening, every outsider had already been convinced that the victim could not be trusted.

“Did they take you to a lawyer?” I asked.

She nodded.

“Julian said we were updating my estate plan. The lawyer asked me questions, but Chloe kept squeezing my shoulder whenever I answered incorrectly.”

“Do you remember the lawyer’s name?”

“Mr. Porter. His office was above a pharmacy.”

My pulse quickened.

“Martin Porter?”

“Yes.”

Martin Porter had surrendered his license two years earlier after allegations that he prepared fraudulent property transfers for vulnerable clients.

He was not supposed to be practicing law at all.

“What did you sign?”

“A new will. A power of attorney. Something about the house. Julian covered parts of the pages with his hand.”

“Did anyone witness your signature?”

“Two men I didn’t know.”

“What happened afterward?”

“They took me to the bank.”

Her breathing became shallow.

I stopped the questions and helped her put on a soft nightgown from the cabinet. The fabric brushed against her bruises, and she flinched.

“Take your time,” I said.

“I don’t have time.”

The fear in her voice made me look up.

“What do you mean?”

“They’re sending me away tomorrow.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. Chloe said a van is coming at nine.”

I felt something inside me harden.

“Did she name the facility?”

“She called it Willow something.”

“Willow Haven?”

Mother nodded.

I knew the name.
