An entitled woman destroyed my son’s sandcastle because it “blocked her view”—twenty minutes later, a lifeguard walked straight toward her carrying a golden box.

“But…” He opened his hand and looked at the pin.

“Mr.

— ” He glanced up at the old man.

“Walt,” the man said.

“Mr.

Walt knew about Dad.”

“He did.”

Noah looked back at the sand.

“Can we build another one?”

My throat tightened.

“Right now?”

“Yeah.” He looked up at me.

“I want to put the flag on it.

And the pin too.

Right on top.”

Walt lowered himself back into his beach chair with a grunt and a small smile.

“I’ll watch,” he said.

“Make sure nobody bothers you.”

We built it for two hours.

It wasn’t as tall as the first one.

The tide was coming in and we had less time.

But Noah worked with a focus I hadn’t seen in months.

He shaped the towers carefully.

He dug the moat deep.

He found a flat piece of shell and used it as a door.

When it was done, he stood up, brushed the sand from his knees, and reached into his pocket.

He placed the small American flag on the highest tower.

Then he opened his other hand and pressed the bronze pin into the sand just below it, angled so it caught the light.

He stepped back and looked at it for a long moment.

“Dad would like it,” he said.

“He would love it,” I said.

Walt was watching from his chair.

He didn’t say anything.

He just gave one slow nod.

I took a photo.

Not for anyone else.

Just for us.
